Remote work productivity statistics (2026): what the studies actually found
Is remote work more or less productive? The honest answer from the research is: it depends on what was measured, who was measured and whether they chose to be remote. A large randomised trial of hybrid work found no measurable performance difference. Studies of fully remote call-centre work find both gains and losses depending on who selected into it. One study of IT professionals found longer hours for the same output. Surveys of managers now lean positive. The numbers behind each of those claims are below, with the study, the year and the sample for every one, so you can see where they agree and where they do not.

Key remote work productivity statistics (2026)

1. What the randomised trials measured
Only a handful of studies have randomly assigned people to remote or office work and then measured output. They are the most trustworthy evidence available, and also the most specific: each one measured one kind of job at one company.
Does hybrid work reduce performance?
Not in this trial. In a six-month randomised trial of 1,612 employees at Trip.com in 2021 to 2022, a hybrid schedule with two days a week at home had no effect on performance grades over the next two years of reviews and no effect on promotions, overall or for any major subgroup. It also had no effect on the lines of code written by the company's engineers. Meanwhile it improved job satisfaction and cut quit rates by one-third.
What this means: The result supports two home days a week for the jobs and company studied. It does not establish that every hybrid schedule, or fully remote work, has the same effect.
Did managers change their minds after the trial?
Yes. The 395 managers in the same experiment expected hybrid work to hurt productivity by 2.6% before it started. After it, they expected it to improve productivity by 1.0%.
What this means: Managers became more positive after trying the schedule. Their expectations are a separate measure from the performance reviews and promotion records.
What did the original work-from-home experiment find?
Call-centre employees at Ctrip who were randomly assigned to work from home for nine months showed a 13% performance increase: about 9% from working more minutes per shift, with fewer breaks and sick days, and 4% from more calls per minute in a quieter environment. When the company then let everyone choose, over half switched, and the gains from working from home almost doubled to 22%.
What this means: The 13% gain came from a randomised comparison of call-centre employees. The later 22% figure includes workers choosing their arrangement, so it should not be treated as a second randomised estimate.
2. Selection: who chooses remote jobs
The second group of studies did not randomise. They watched what happened when offices closed in 2020 and compared people who were already remote with people who were not. In the call-centre study below, differences between workers helped explain the results.
How much of the call-centre gap came from worker differences?
At a Fortune 500 call centre, remote workers answered 12% fewer calls per hour than on-site workers before COVID-19. After offices closed and everyone went remote, the gap narrowed from 12% to 8%, which the authors attribute to negative selection into remote jobs. Formerly on-site workers' call quality and promotion rates also declined once they were remote.
What this means: At this company, differences between the people taking remote and office jobs explained part of the gap. A comparison of the two groups alone would overstate the effect of working remotely.
Can savings from remote work cover the productivity loss?
Partly. The same study's cost-benefit analysis finds that savings from reduced turnover and office rent could outweigh the negative productivity effect of remote work, but not the cost of attracting less productive workers into remote roles.
What this means: The authors distinguish savings from rent and turnover from differences in output and hiring. The balance depends on the company; these results are not a general estimate of remote work savings.
3. Knowledge work: hours, output and the coordination tax
Call centres are easy to measure. Software, consulting and design are not, and the IT study below found output holding steady while hours increased.
Did remote work make knowledge workers less productive?
At a large Asian IT services company, personnel and analytics data on more than 10,000 professionals showed total hours worked rose by roughly 30% during work from home, including an 18% rise in work after normal business hours. Average output did not significantly change, so productivity fell by about 20%. Time in coordination activities and meetings increased, uninterrupted work hours shrank, and employees received less coaching and fewer one-to-one meetings with supervisors.
What this means: Longer hours did not translate into more output at this company. Increased coordination and reduced uninterrupted time help explain the result, but it does not show that a particular workflow change would recover the lost productivity.
Were employees with children affected differently?
Yes. In the same study, employees with children living at home increased their hours more than those without, and suffered a bigger decline in productivity.
What this means: These results come from the pandemic, when home working often coincided with school closures and care responsibilities. The comparison does not isolate the effect of childcare alone.
What happened to collaboration when a whole firm went remote?
Using emails, calendars, messages and calls from 61,182 Microsoft employees over the first six months of 2020, researchers found that firm-wide remote work caused collaboration networks to become more static and siloed, with fewer bridges between different parts of the company. Synchronous communication fell and asynchronous communication rose.
What this means: The study measured communication patterns across the company. It raises a concern about collaboration between teams, but does not quantify a corresponding loss of output.
4. Proximity: what the office actually does for productivity
One study of software engineers examined how sitting near colleagues affected feedback, learning and individual output.
How much does sitting near teammates matter?
Studying software engineers at a Fortune 500 firm from 2019 to 2024, across both the 2020 office closures and the 2022 to 2023 return-to-office mandates, researchers found that sitting near teammates increases coding feedback by 18.3% and improves code quality. The gains are concentrated among less-tenured and younger employees. There is a trade-off: experienced engineers write less code when sitting near teammates, because they spend the time giving that feedback.
What this means: Proximity supported feedback and learning, especially for newer engineers, while taking time from experienced colleagues' own coding. Individual output and team development can move in different directions.
5. Time saved, and where it goes
How much time does working from home save?
Across 27 countries, the average daily commute time saved when working from home is 72 minutes. Work from home saved about two hours per week per worker in 2021 and 2022, and the authors estimate it saves about one hour per week per worker after the pandemic. Workers put 40% of the saved time into their jobs and about 11% into caregiving.
What this means: The reported saving applies to a day worked from home, not every working day. Some of that time went into work, but extra working minutes are not the same as higher output per hour.
How much do workers value the option to work from home?
Full-time workers in 27 countries value the option to work from home two to three days a week at 5% of pay on average, more for women, parents and people with long commutes. Employers in the same survey planned an average of 0.7 home days a week after the pandemic while workers wanted 1.7, and most employees said they were favourably surprised by their own productivity at home.
What this means: This is a survey estimate of how much employees value flexibility, not an actual pay rise or a measured explanation for the separate Trip.com retention result.
6. How widespread home working was by 2023
What share of paid workdays happen at home?
28% of paid workdays among Americans aged 20 to 64 were full days worked at home as of mid-2023, according to the Survey of Working Arrangements and Attitudes. That is about four times the 2019 rate and roughly ten times the mid-1990s rate.
What this means: This is a mid-2023 adoption estimate, not a 2026 productivity measure. It provides context for how widespread home working had become.

How have remote-capable jobs shifted?
Among remote-capable US employees, the share working fully on-site fell from 60% in 2019 to 20% in 2023, while the share working exclusively remotely rose from 8% to 29%. Hybrid became the most common arrangement.
What this means: These figures describe the changing mix of arrangements among remote-capable employees. They do not track the same individuals moving between schedules or measure their output.

7. What recent surveys and telemetry show
A manager survey measures perceptions; communication telemetry measures activity. Neither should be read as a direct measure of productivity.
Do managers think remote work has made their teams more productive?
69% of managers believe that working hybrid or remotely has made their team more productive. In the same survey, 59% of workers schedule personal appointments during traditional working hours, and 28% have additional jobs or side work.
What this means: This is a positive assessment from managers, not a measured productivity gain. The figures about appointments and side work do not establish why managers held that view.
How much communication does Microsoft record?
Microsoft's telemetry shows the average worker receives 117 emails a day, most skimmed in under 60 seconds, and 153 Teams messages per weekday. 40% of people online at 6am are reviewing email for the day's priorities, and mass emails with 20 or more recipients rose 7% in a year while one-to-one threads fell 5%.
What this means: The figures describe communication volume, not output. Microsoft's telemetry is not limited to remote workers, so it cannot establish that remote work caused the pattern.

8. What distributed teams look like in Breeze
Of the 115 Breeze teams with at least two members active in the 30 days to early September 2026, 39% have members in two or more time zones, and 19% span three or more. Anonymised and aggregated from account time-zone settings; a team is counted once regardless of size.
What this means: Time-zone settings suggest some teams need to coordinate across different working hours. They do not establish where people work, whether their hours overlap, or how productive they are.

What can teams take from these findings?
The studies do not produce one reliable percentage for the productivity effect of remote work. They cover different jobs, schedules and periods, including emergency home working during the pandemic. The hybrid trial found no measurable performance cost at Trip.com; the fully remote studies found both gains and losses.
For your own team, compare completed work, quality and hours over time. Check whether newer colleagues get useful feedback and whether work stalls between teams. A shared project board and written handoffs may help with coordination, but none of these studies tests Breeze or proves that a project management tool closes a productivity gap.
Use the findings to decide what to measure and which working arrangements to test. They are stronger evidence for asking specific questions about your team than for declaring one location best for everyone.
